The Importance of Time Keeping

Time is arguably the most important thing in the world. As a young person sometimes it is hard to comprehend when adults call you out on being late. In films and series, I’m sure you’ve seen the boss call out an employee for being late.

 “You’re late!”

You fail to understand why this should have an impact on your football skills or you being in team selections. It has a massive impact.

I learnt during my time going to Germany in 2018 on how important it is to keep time when I was living with my German teammate who would drive us everyday. He was forever onto me on leaving to be early for training. It is a massive part of the culture there.

When I was at West Ham, before Germany, I didn’t really realize how important it is to keep time. I was coming into training late after the scheduled meeting time. We would have breakfast, which sometimes I would skip because I wanted more sleep. Not getting enough rest the night before so I compensated in missing breakfast before training, which is also a very important part of your daily routine as a footballer. I would come a bit later, arriving closer to training.

These things play a massive impact in your football as coaches are forever watching your moves, perhaps I was punctual and on time then coaches would have trusted me more in team selections, tactics, new contracts etc.

Being late is never a positive; it can only be a negative. Being on time can only be a positive and help you on your journey, you may not realise why this is but you will realize when you are and the person who is not late plays over you but he is nowhere near as good a player as you are.

It will hurt even more when this player, scores or assists and does well in place of you and now you have to train and fight your way back into the team which was easily avoidable.

Being on time is important for several reasons:

  1. Respect for others: Being punctual shows respect for other people’s time and schedules.
  2. Professionalism: In many professional settings, punctuality is considered a measure of reliability and responsibility.
  3. Efficient use of time: Being on time can help ensure that meetings, appointments, and events start and end as planned, making the best use of everyone’s time.
  4. Avoiding negative consequences: Being late can result in missed opportunities, lost productivity, or even strained relationships.
  5. Building trust: Consistently being on time can build trust in personal and professional relationships.
